Ambulatory Care Services and MTM Hub Description

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC) offers comprehensive outpatient services, including ambulatory pharmacy clinics that manage complex disease states requiring medication management. The various pharmacist-run service lines range from specialty clinics such as neurology, IBD, rheumatology, pulmonology, cardiology, to core services such as anticoagulation, smoking cessation, and medication therapy management, to primary care where we treat chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. OSUWMC pharmacy offers in-person or telehealth services, collaborates with providers to offer a high level of service, and furthermore operates a centralized triage process for all pharmacy clinics, including our comprehensive specialty and specialty-lite medication therapy management program. The Medication Therapy Management (MTM) Hub represents a comprehensive approach to caring for patients on complex medication regimens across the institution. This University Hospitals based service aims to add consistency to operations, facilitate access to medications, and ensure high quality clinical care.

Scope of Position

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Pharmacy, Ambulatory Care, the Ambulatory Clinics Pharmacy Technician is responsible for assisting the licensed pharmacist in providing pharmaceutical services to patients, as well as providing necessary services and information to nursing and medical staff. Actual time spent will fluctuate depending on departmental needs. Responsibilities include medication therapy management (MTM) hub coordination such as fax amp; phone triage, record requests, and chart prep, clinic lab coordination, fax triage such as refill or quality requests, refill review and prep, triage of medication access barriers and next steps, review vaccine history or other patient reported data/outcomes, scheduling or scheduling triage as needed including error correction and process improvement, revenue guardian responsibilities may be included as far as review of pharmacist clinic charges. This position requires a high level of clinical knowledge and the ability to work proficiently in the EPIC medical record. In addition, this position provides support through education and communication to other departments such as MIM, PCRMs, Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, PAs, and other clinical personnel.

Position Summary:

The Ambulatory Clinics Pharmacy Technician assists the licensed pharmacist in coordinating all operations pertinent to ambulatory pharmacy operations. Work related to the Ambulatory Clinics may consist of coordinating all facets of ambulatory care encompassing triage MTM hub communications, lab coordination, revenue monitoring, scheduling, and overall support of daily MTM hub operations, and keeping appropriate records and documentation.

Minimum Qualifications:

For Hire: High school diploma or equivalent, active OH Board of Pharmacy Certified Pharmacy Technician registration, PTCB/NHA certification, minimum 6 months of experience within OSUWMC in the role of Pharmacy Technician I. Further qualifications defined based on departmental guidance on pharmacy technician career advancement program.

Ongoing: PTCB/NHA certification and OH Board of Pharmacy registration must be maintained for continued employment.
